Community Initiative

Four Johnson & Johnson local operating companies (Janssen Cilag, Johnson & Johnson, Johnson & Johnson Medical, and LifeScan) in partnership with the Fundacion Tomillo launched a BTE program in Madrid, Spain in an effort to alleviate the social, educational, and economic inequalities among Spain’s at-risk youth.

The BTE-Madrid program targeted 50 students, between the ages of 16 and 22 years old, enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant and Pharmaceutical Aid programs (Middle Vocational Training grades) at IES Leonardo da Vinci, IES Prado de Santo Domingo, and IES Villaverde. BTE students participated in a range of activities including:

  • Technical skills training
  • Tutoring classes
  • Personal development workshops
  • Networking activities
  • Johnson & Johnson guest lectures
  • Internships
  • Educational and labor guidance
  • Employment intermediation and job placement

Impact

Through technical and academic skill-building opportunities, the BTE-Madrid program enabled students to pursue higher education and guarantee a successful job placement in the health industry.  Key outcomes include:

  • 58 students from three area secondary schools enrolled in the BTE program.
  • 218 students were indirectly served by the program and its activities.
  • 79 percent of BTE students graduated from secondary school vs. 33 percent of comparison students.
  • 84.2 percent of BTE students successfully passed degree exams.
  • 80 percent of BTE graduates are employed in their field of study – substantially better than the Spanish youth unemployment rate (51 percent at the time of the program).
  • The local operating company elected to fund (€90,000 over three years) an additional BTE program for a new cohort of 50 students.
